Science Center at Maltby Nature Preserve
Randolph, MN
This new STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) school in the Northfield area will be the first LEED Platinum Certified School in Minnesota. The new school will be located in the middle of the Maltby Nature Preserve- integrating the nature and environment into the classroom. Classrooms will open out directly to the outdoors with outdoor labs throughout the preserve to study the varying ecosystems. Mechanical and electrical systems are being designed not only to maximize performance, but also to allow the students to measure the actual performance.
Geothermal ground source heat pump systems, daylighting, green roof, roof decks, water filtration, recycled & regional materials and landscape preservation are key elements in the LEED rating of the building. Other alternative energy systems such as wind turbines are being explored to go off-grid or supplement the power supply.
