St. Peter Community Center

St. Peter, MN

Following the tornadoes of 1998 that destroyed many of St. Peter’s community buildings, designers set out to recreate a central community center that would serve as a gathering place for all residents. Never before had a community needed to come together more and never before had so many of St. Peter’s community services been located in one place.

Today, the St. Peter Community Center is bustling with activity. A senior center, day-care center, Early Childhood Education Services, a gymnasium/field house and tenant office space are all located in one convenient, efficient location. Tiered plazas on the north side of the building provide spaces intimate enough for a small group to enjoy a a cup of coffee from the Community Center’s coffee shop or for the community to come together for a public gathering.

Architects successfully provided an endearing link between the past and the future by including many visual elements reminiscent of its predecessor building in the new Community Center. Large windows, brick/stone stone bases, brick patterns/corbelling, stone headers over the entrances and other detailing that was similar to that of the original building were all utilized.

The Center, overlooking beautiful Gorman Park, is primarily full masonry construction and utilizes brick and locally-quarried limestone. All materials, including a metal roof, were chosen for maximum durability and flexibility.
