Mitchell County Jail
Osage, IA
The existing Mitchell County Jail facility was cramped, in poor condition and operationally did not meet the needs and requirements of Mitchell County. Feasibility studies showed that demolishing the structure and building a new facility would be more cost effective than renovating the existing jail, meet the County’s current and future needs and better serve the public. Because the site of the new jail is located adjacent to the existing historic Mitchell County Courthouse and in a residential neighborhood, designers took great care in making sure the new facility would not only blend into the historic area, but also provide maximum safety for neighbors.
The new jail is a 21-bed facility with holding cells, Sallyport, evidence room and squad rooms. The building also houses the County’s Sheriff’s Department and the County Disaster Center, including the 911 Center. Kitchen facilities and administrative offices are also included in the new building.
Brick, stone, white wood trim, and a gabled front entry gives the jail a look that is blends into the neighboring homes and provides continuity with its surroundings.
