Intergovernmental Center

Through an innovative partnership, the Intergovernmental Center (IGC) now houses all City of Mankato offices as well as Independent School District 77 business and administrative offices.

The conversion of the existing, but blighted and near-vacant Mankato Place Mall into the citizen-friendly IGC, represents the City’s commitment to downtown revitalization, doing more with less and providing citizens with a convenient one-stop shop regardless of level of government.

Approximately half of the second floor of the old mall is a renovation of a former department store while the remaining IGC is new construction attached to the renovated space. The facility includes offices, meeting and conference rooms, a state-of-the-art Council Chamber with seating for 75, and a two-story sky lit public lobby/atrium with an interactive information kiosk. A beautifully-landscaped exterior plaza extends the building outdoors and serves as a community gathering place and is a catalyst for further urban design expansion.

The building is modern, but has detailing such as brick corbelling and stone accents that blend into the historic downtown area. Designers “connected” the existing and new structures with a large public common area that provides additional community event space.

The facility includes offices, meeting rooms and conference rooms for all City departments as well as for School District 77 business and administrative functions.

Other building features are a Council Chamber with seating for 70-80, equipped with state of the art technology, and a two-story sky lit public lobby/atrium with an interactive information kiosk. At the location where the IGC is attached to the Mankato Place Mall, and as a connection between the two structures, a large public common area is incorporated for additional community event space. An exterior landscaped plaza is another feature of the IGC. The plaza serves as an extension of the building and a catalyst for further urban design expansion.

The IGC building is designed to be modern and efficient, yet respectful of the historic context of downtown Mankato. Building details such as brick corbeling, stone accents and interior wainscot reflect historic Mankato.
